What's in a Name? The History of Quidnick
The area we know as Quidnick today has had a few different names over the years!
Early Days: Greeneville and Taftville
Long ago, even before the American Revolution (the war where America became independent), the land where Quidnick and a nearby village called Anthony now stand was known as Greeneville. This name came from the Greene family, who ran a special workshop called an iron forge there in the mid-1700s. An iron forge is a place where metal is heated and shaped.
Later, around 1811, the village got a new name: Taftville. This was to honor Stephen Taft, who owned a local factory that made cotton fabric.
How Quidnick Got Its Name
The name Quidnick came about in 1840. A powerful family called the Sprague family bought the village. They decided to rename it Quidnick. This name comes from a word used by Native American people, and it means "at the end of the hill."
The main factory building, known as the Quidnick Mill Complex, was built a few years later in 1848.
