Quietus is the name of a place in Big Horn County, Montana, in the United States. It used to be a small town, but now no one lives there. It is considered an unincorporated community, which means it's a place without its own local government. You can find Quietus on maps made by the U.S. Geological Survey.
History of Quietus
Quietus started as a post office in 1907. It helped people who were homesteaders (people who got land from the government to farm) and ranchers in the nearby valleys. These valleys were along the Otter and Quietus Creeks.
Quietus was never a very big community. Over time, fewer and fewer people lived there. Eventually, the population dropped to less than twelve residents. Because of this, the post office closed in 1957.
Today, Quietus is known as a "ghost town." This means it's a place where a town once stood, but now it's mostly empty. You can still see the old loop road and the remains of the post office building, even though it has fallen apart.
How Quietus Got Its Name
There's a fun story about how Quietus got its name. In 1914, a man named Frank Brittain sent a list of fifteen names for the town's new post office. But all of his ideas were turned down!
Frank Brittain told his wife, "Well, I guess they put a quietus on that." The word quietus means to put an end to something. His wife thought this was a great idea for a name. She sent in a new application, and just a few weeks later, the name Quietus was approved!
