Exploring the Quincy Hotel's Design
The Quincy Hotel stands in the middle of Enosburg Falls village. You can find it on the north side of Depot Street. It is located between Vermont Route 108N and Archambault Street.
Right across the street, there used to be a railroad track. This track belonged to the Missisquoi Railroad. Now, that old railroad path is a walking and biking trail. It is called the Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail.
What the Building Looks Like
The hotel is made of wood and shaped like a "U". It has three stories, which means three main levels. The roof is low and slopes gently. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding.
A porch runs along the front of the building. This porch has one story and is supported by columns. These columns are called Tuscan columns. The porch extends to the right side of the building. It forms a special covered area for cars, called a porte-cochere. Two three-story sections extend from the back of the hotel. These were added later, after the hotel was first built.
The Hotel's Interesting Past
The Quincy Hotel was built around 1876. This was an exciting time for the village. The railroad had just arrived in Enosburg Falls. The railroad brought more people and helped the local economy grow.
Who Built the Hotel?
A man named B.J. Kendall built the hotel. He owned a local company. This company made a special medicine called liniment. It was known as the Dr. B. J. Kendall Company.
Changes Over Time
When it was first built, the hotel had a Second Empire style. The third floor of the hotel was very special. It had a large ballroom where people could dance.
However, a big fire happened in 1923. The fire badly damaged the third floor. The owners decided to hire architect Louis Newton. He rebuilt the third floor. He also changed the hotel's style. He updated it to the popular Colonial Revival look.
The hotel's success was linked to the railroad. When the railroad was busy, the hotel was busy too. But the railroad stopped running in 1984. After that, the hotel was used much less.
