Built in 1880, this building was where a special horse medicine called "Kendall's Spavin Cure" was made and sold. This company was a big success for the town. Its owners helped build many important buildings. The factory building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. As of 2025, the building is empty.

The Kendall Company Building: A Look Inside

The old Dr. B.J. Kendall Company building stands out in Enosburg Falls. It is on the east side of North Main Street. The building has two stories and is made of wood. Its main part has a special roof called a mansard roof. This roof allows for a full third floor inside. There is also an extra section with a flat roof.

The outside of the building is covered in vinyl siding. This was put over the original wooden boards. The building sits on a strong stone foundation. A small, square tower rises from the middle of the building. This tower also has a mansard roof. The windows on both the main roof and the tower roof have fancy decorations. Some old iron decorations are still on top of the tower. Inside, the building still has many original features. These include an elevator, fireproof rooms, and a speaking tube system.

History of Kendall's Spavin Cure

The factory was built in 1880. Dr. B.J. Kendall grew up in Enosburg Falls. He came back home in the 1870s. He owned a drug store at that time. Dr. Kendall created a special liquid medicine. It was for a horse problem called bone spavin. This problem made horses lame, meaning they couldn't walk properly.

His medicine worked well and became popular locally. Dr. Kendall wanted to sell it to more people. So, he built this factory with help from local investors. The business became very successful. Its products were sold all across the country. They went from the East Coast all the way to the Rocky Mountains.

Dr. Kendall and the other owners became very wealthy. They built beautiful homes in the town. They also helped pay for the Enosburg Opera House. In the early 1900s, cars became very popular. People used horses less and less. Because of this, the demand for horse medicine went down. The Dr. B.J. Kendall Company closed its doors in 1957.
