History of the Park

The park has an interesting history. It was created from land that was left over after a big road project.

How the Park Was Formed

The Quinnipiac River State Park was officially created in 1948. This happened after the Wilbur Cross Parkway was built. The park uses land that was not needed for the highway.

Who Manages the Park?

The park is managed by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. They work to keep the park beautiful and safe for everyone. They also protect its natural environment.

The Quinnipiac Trail

A long hiking path called the Quinnipiac Trail once went through the park. It was about 4 miles (6 km) long here.

Changes to the Trail

This part of the Quinnipiac Trail is no longer used. It has been officially closed and is not maintained anymore. The trail went through a "floodplain," which is an area that often gets flooded by the river. Because of this, it was too hard to keep the trail in good condition.

Today, maps of the Quinnipiac Trail do not show this section. The trail now starts further south at Old Hartford Turnpike.
