A Look at Quiriego's History
The name "Quiriego" comes from two old Latin words: "kirie," which means "lord," and "ego," which means "I." These words are part of old church songs.
In this region, you can find the old ruins of a place called Real de Minas y Villa de Baroyeca. This was once a very important settlement in Sonora a long time ago, during the time when Spain ruled Mexico (the colonial period) and just after Mexico became independent.
You can also see the ruins of old missions, which were like churches and settlements built by missionaries. These missions, called Batacosa and Tepahui, were founded in the 1700s.
The town of Quiriego started as a ranch owned by Francisco Javier Valenzuela in the late 1700s. Quiriego officially became its own municipality (like a county) in 1932.

Farmers grow crops like watermelon, sorghum, corn, and beans. They also grow special grasses to feed the cattle. In the year 2000, there were about 34,096 cattle in the area.
