The Quiz Kids Challenge was a fun American game show that aired in 1990. It was inspired by older "Quiz Kids" shows where kids answered questions from adults. This show put a new spin on that idea!

The show started on September 10, 1990. It was hosted by Jonathan Prince. You might have heard the voices of Johnny Gilbert or Charlie Tuna as the announcers.

The Quiz Kids Challenge ran for about 16 weeks, with 80 episodes. It ended on December 28, 1990. Later, you could watch reruns on the Game Show Network.

This show was made by The Guber-Peters Company and Chillmark Productions.

How the Game Was Played

The Quiz Kids Challenge was different from the old "Quiz Kids" shows. Instead of just kids answering questions, this show had a special competition. A team of three adults played against a team of "Quiz Kids."

The "Quiz Kids" were students aged 12 to 14. A new adult team played each day. But the same team of "Quiz Kids" played together for a whole week!

Round One: Category Challenge

The game board had nine screens showing eight different categories. A player was chosen to pick a category. Then, a quick "toss-up" question was asked for $50.

If a team buzzed in and answered correctly, they won the money. If they answered wrong, the other team got a chance to answer.

Most categories had two more $50 toss-up questions. But one special category, called "Triple Play," only had one question. If a team answered it correctly, they won $150! The team that answered the last question correctly got to pick the next category.

Sometimes, one category was called "Viewer's Choice." The questions in this category came from ideas sent in by people watching the show at home.

Round Two: Double or Nothing

In this round, eight new categories appeared on the board. The team that was behind in score started this round. A $50 toss-up question was asked, just like before.

If a team answered correctly, they could either keep the $50 or try to "double" it. If they chose to double, a second question was asked. If they answered that correctly, their money doubled to $100! They could then try for a third question. If they got that right, they won $200 total for that category.

If a player answered incorrectly, the other team could try to "steal" the money by answering correctly. If no one answered correctly, that category was removed. This round had a time limit, and a buzzer signaled when time was up.

Final Round: 100-Second Challenge

The last round was a fast-paced challenge with four categories. The team that was behind started by picking a category. A question was asked, and a 100-second clock began once someone buzzed in.

If a player answered correctly, they got to pick the next category. If they answered wrong, the other team got a chance. If neither team answered correctly, that category was replaced with a new one.

The value of the questions doubled every 25 seconds.

  • For the first 25 seconds, each correct answer was worth $50.
  • For the next 25 seconds, it was $100.
  • Then, $200 for the next 25 seconds.
  • And finally, $400 for the last 25 seconds!

The team with the most money when time ran out won the game! Both teams split their final money. The "Quiz Kids" kept their winnings each day and added to it throughout the week. At the end of their week, their total winnings were revealed and split among the three of them.
