Qutlugh-Khanids facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Qutlugh-Khanids were a ruling family from the Khitan group. They governed a region called Kirman, which is now part of Kerman Province in Iran. Their rule lasted from 1222 to 1306.

This dynasty was started by a person named Buraq Hajib. He came from the Qara Khitai (Western Liao dynasty) during a time when their empire was falling apart because of the Mongols.

At first, the Qutlugh-Khanids were independent. But later, they became rulers who served other powerful empires. They were vassals (meaning they owed loyalty and taxes) to the Khwarazmian dynasty, then the mighty Mongol Empire, and finally the Ilkhanate. The Ilkhanate ruler Öljaitü eventually removed them from power. He then put Nasir al-Din Muhammad ibn Burhan in charge of Kirman.

What's in a Name?

Sometimes, you might hear the Qutlugh-Khanids called the "Later Western Liao." This name was suggested by a scholar in 1983. He thought of them as a continuation of the earlier Western Liao dynasty.

How the Dynasty Ended

The Mongol ruler Öljaitü (who ruled from 1304 to 1316) brought an end to the Qutlugh-Khanid dynasty in 1306. The last Qutlugh Khan, named Quțb al-Dīn II, had not paid his taxes to the Mongol treasury.

Because of this, Quțb al-Dīn II had to escape to Shiraz. Later, his daughter married Mubārriz al-Dīn Muhammad. He was the person who founded the Muzaffarid dynasty.
