The Río Grande (also known as Río Guapay) is a major river in Bolivia. It starts high up in the Cochabamba mountains. This river is very important for the areas it flows through.

Where the Río Grande Starts

The Río Grande begins on the southern side of the Cochabamba mountains. This is east of the city of Cochabamba. At its very start, it is called the Rocha River.

The Rocha River's Journey

The Rocha River flows west through the Cochabamba valley. After about 65 kilometers (40 miles), it changes direction. It then turns to flow southeast.

Joining the Arque River

About 50 kilometers (31 miles) further, the Rocha River meets the Arque River. This meeting point is at an elevation of 2,350 meters (7,710 feet).

From Caine to Río Grande

After the Rocha and Arque rivers join, the river gets a new name: the Caine River. It keeps this name for about 162 kilometers (101 miles). The Caine River also flows in a southeasterly direction.

Becoming the Río Grande

Eventually, the Caine River becomes known as the Río Grande. After flowing for a total of about 500 kilometers (310 miles), the river makes a big turn. It starts flowing northeast.

Flowing Around Santa Cruz

The Río Grande then makes a wide curve around the lowland city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. This city is a very important place in Bolivia.

Where the Río Grande Ends

The Río Grande travels a long way, about 1,438 kilometers (893 miles) in total. It finally joins the Ichilo River. The Ichilo River is a branch of the Mamoré River. The Mamoré River is one of the largest rivers in Bolivia.
