Puerto Pailas is a town and a special area called a canton in the Santa Cruz Department of Bolivia. Bolivia is a country in South America.

Where is Puerto Pailas Located?

Puerto Pailas is the main town of the Puerto Pailas Canton. It is part of the Cotoca Municipality in Andrés Ibáñez Province. The town sits about 297 meters (974 feet) above sea level. It is on the left bank of the Río Grande. This river is one of the longest in Bolivia's lowlands. At Puerto Pailas, the river is very wide, about 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) across. A large road bridge crosses the river here.

Roads and Transportation

Puerto Pailas is a very important place for roads in its region. It is located 47 kilometers (about 29 miles) east of Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is the capital city of the department. Puerto Pailas is on the main road that connects Santa Cruz to other areas like Beni, the Chiquitanía, and even Brazil.

From Santa Cruz, a paved road called Ruta 4/Ruta 9 goes east. It passes through Cotoca before reaching Puerto Pailas. Here, it crosses the Río Grande. On the other side of the river is the town of Pailón. From Pailón, Ruta 4 continues east for another 587 kilometers (365 miles) to Puerto Suárez near the Brazilian border. Ruta 9 goes north for 1,175 kilometers (730 miles) to Guayaramerin.

In Puerto Pailas, a dirt road turns off Rutas 4 and 9. It goes northwest for 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) to the nearby town of Montero Hoyos.

How Many People Live Here?

The number of people living in Puerto Pailas has grown quickly in the last 20 years.

  • In 1992, there were 1,621 people.
  • By 2001, the population grew to 2,301.
  • In 2009, it was estimated that 3,141 people lived there.

Because many people have moved to this area over the years, there is a group of Quechua people in the region. About 17.8 percent of the people in Puerto Pailas Municipality speak the Quechua language.
