Cotoca is a town and a special area (called a municipality) in Bolivia. It's part of the Santa Cruz Department. The Cotoca area includes two main parts: Cotoca town and Puerto Pailas. In 2010, about 24,000 people lived in the Cotoca town area, and over 56,000 lived in the whole municipality.
In 1799, the Catholic Church allowed a special church (called a shrine) to be built in Cotoca. This shrine was for the Virgen de Cotoca, a religious image of Mary (mother of Jesus) that was seen in the town. Today, the Virgin is considered the special protector of the entire Santa Cruz province. Thousands of Bolivians visit Cotoca for her feast day, which is celebrated from December 8 to 15.
