What is REAL District?
REAL District is a huge area designed for sports, entertainment, and trade shows. It brings together many different venues in one place. This makes it a central hub for activities in Regina.
Home to Sports Teams
Two major sports teams call REAL District home. The Saskatchewan Roughriders are a professional football team. They play their games at the outdoor Mosaic Stadium. The Regina Pats are a junior hockey team. They play their exciting games at the indoor Brandt Centre.
Many Buildings for Events
REAL District has a variety of buildings for different purposes.
- Mosaic Stadium: An outdoor stadium for football and other large events.
- Brandt Centre: An indoor arena for hockey games, concerts, and shows.
- Viterra International Trade Centre: A large space for trade shows and conventions.
- Canada Place: Another facility for various events.
- AffinityPlex: A multi-purpose indoor area, great for indoor soccer.
- Queensbury Convention Centre: A place for conferences, meetings, and banquets.
- The Co-operators Centre: A facility with six ice rinks for hockey and skating.
History of the District
The area now known as REAL District has a long history. It has changed names and added new buildings over the years.
Old Stadium Demolished
A historic building called the Regina Exhibition Stadium once stood here. It was built way back in 1919. In 2017, this old arena was taken down. This made space for a new, modern building. The new building is the International Trade Centre. It is a large convention space, perfect for big events.
How the Name Changed
The district has had a few different names.
- Before 2006, it was known as Regina Exhibition Park.
- From 2006 to 2008, it was called IPSCO Place. This was because a company called IPSCO bought the naming rights.
- From 2008 to 2022, it was known as Evraz Place. This name came from a British steel company called Evraz.
In March 2022, the name changed again to REAL District. The Regina Exhibition Association Limited (REAL) wanted the name to show their connection to the site. They also found that some people thought Evraz Place was a company office. This caused confusion, with shipments and calls going to the wrong place. The contract with Evraz had ended in May 2021. The new name was announced a bit earlier than planned.
Future Growth of REAL District
REAL District continues to grow and improve. There have been plans for new additions to the area. For example, a new distillery was under construction. There were also plans to build a new hotel. These additions help make REAL District an even more exciting place to visit.
