Raúl's Professional Boxing Career

After the 1992 Olympics, Raúl Márquez became a professional boxer. This means he started boxing for money and titles. He had an amazing start, winning his first 25 fights in a row!

Winning a Major Title

His many wins led him to fight for the vacant IBF Light Middleweight Title. He faced Anthony Stephens for this championship. Raúl won the fight by TKO, which means "technical knockout." This happens when the referee stops the fight because one boxer can't safely continue.

Raúl successfully defended his new title two times. One of his wins was against Keith Mullings. However, he later lost his title to the famous Mexican boxer, Yori Boy Campas, also by TKO.

Big Fights and Challenges

In 1999, Raúl Márquez challenged another undefeated champion, Fernando Vargas, for the IBF light middleweight title. Raúl was stopped in the eleventh round.

In 2003, Raúl fought Shane Mosley, another top boxer. Their fight ended in a "no contest" after an accidental clash of heads caused an injury. A "no contest" means the fight doesn't count as a win or loss for either boxer.

In 2004, Raúl moved up to the middleweight division. He fought Jermain Taylor, who was also undefeated at the time. Raúl's corner decided to stop the fight in the ninth round, giving Taylor the win by TKO.

Chasing the Middleweight Title

On June 21, 2008, Raúl Márquez won a very important fight against Giovanni Lorenzo. This fight was an "eliminator," meaning the winner would get a chance to fight for the IBF middleweight title. Raúl won by a unanimous decision, where all the judges agreed he was the winner.

On November 8, 2008, when Raúl was 37 years old, he fought Arthur Abraham for the IBF middleweight title. Abraham was undefeated. Raúl lost the fight by technical knockout in the sixth round. This was Raúl's last professional fight.
