Winning the IBF Light Middleweight Title

His many wins led him to a big opportunity. He got to fight for the vacant IBF Light Middleweight Title. He fought against Anthony Stephens for this championship. Márquez won the fight by TKO (Technical Knockout). This means the referee stopped the fight because Stephens could not continue safely.

Raúl successfully defended his new title two times. He beat Keith Mullings in one of these defenses. Later, he lost his title to the Mexican boxing legend Yori Boy Campas. Campas won by TKO in the eighth round.

Big Fights and Challenges

In 1999, Márquez challenged another undefeated champion. He fought Fernando Vargas for the IBF light middleweight title. Vargas was too strong that night. He stopped Márquez in the eleventh round.

In 2003, Raúl fought Shane Mosley, another top boxer. Their fight ended in a "no contest." This happened after a head clash caused a bad cut. A "no contest" means the fight results are canceled.

By 2004, Márquez was fighting in the middleweight division. He faced the strong and undefeated Jermain Taylor. Márquez's corner stopped the fight in the ninth round. This was to protect him from further injury.

Chasing the IBF Middleweight Title

On June 21, 2008, Márquez had a chance to fight for a title shot. He defeated Giovanni Lorenzo in a special fight. This fight was an "eliminator." In this fight, Márquez kept putting pressure on Lorenzo. Lorenzo tried to box from a distance. Márquez's constant attacks caused problems for Lorenzo. Márquez got a cut over his right eye. But Lorenzo lost a point for headbutting. Márquez won the fight with scores of 114–113 from all judges.
