Raccoon is a small, unincorporated community located in Putnam County, Indiana, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it is a group of homes and businesses that is not officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it is part of a larger area called Franklin Township.
A Glimpse into Raccoon's Past
Raccoon wasn't always called Raccoon! When the area was first planned out in 1880, it was known as Lockridge. "Platting" a community means drawing up maps to show where streets, property lots, and buildings will be located.
A post office opened in Raccoon in 1880. This helped people send and receive mail, connecting the community to the outside world. The post office served the residents for many years until it closed down in 1934.
