For these early Nightmare films, Rachel used her computer skills. She found ways to create cool special effects. She did this while keeping costs low. Even though she knew the Freddy movies well, she was told not to be "too girly" when directing Freddy's Dead.

In 1995, Rachel also directed Tank Girl. She even looked into making a new Tank Girl movie years later. As a producer, Rachel worked with director John Waters. They made movies like Hairspray (1988) and Cry-Baby (1990). She also helped out on Waters' 1981 movie Polyester.

Rachel Talalay always wanted to work on the TV show Doctor Who. She got her wish and directed many important episodes. She directed all three of Peter Capaldi's final episodes as the Doctor. These included "Heaven Sent", which many people think is one of the best Doctor Who episodes ever. She also directed the 2017 Christmas special, "Twice Upon a Time".

In 2023, she returned to Doctor Who for "The Star Beast." This special brought back David Tennant and Catherine Tate. It was part of the show's 60th anniversary celebrations. In 2019, she directed a movie for Netflix. It was called A Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting.
