Radha Blank's Career Journey

Early Creative Work

Radha Blank started her career writing plays. She wrote many plays, but most of them were never performed. In an interview, she said she had "about 12 plays that haven't seen the light of day." Some of her plays include HappyFlowerNail, Casket Sharp, nannyland, and Seed.

Radha won several awards for her playwriting. These include the Helen Merrill Playwriting Award and the NEA New Play Development Award. Even though her plays weren't always performed, they helped her get jobs writing for TV shows.

Her play Seed was performed Off-Broadway in Harlem in 2011. It was about a social worker who became very interested in a child genius. The Huffington Post called Seed "fresh, lively...and poetic."

Early in her career, Radha also wrote for children's TV shows. She worked on The Backyardigans and Little Bill. She also wrote for popular children's shorts like "Maya the Indian Princess" and “My Papa Is A Moco Jumbie” for Nickelodeon and Nick Jr.

In 2015, Radha wrote and directed a funny short film called Sam Bowe: Speech Writer. It was shown on FunnyOrDie.com.

Around this time, she created her rap alter ego, RadhaMUSprime. She performed a live show called "The Forty-Year Old Version: A Mixtape." In this show, she used music, rhymes, and film to express her feelings about losing her mother and turning 40. She started this rap persona after losing a screenwriting job. Radha says she has been rhyming since she was about 10 years old. She feels that hip-hop allows artists to be bold and speak their truth. She also worked as a writer for TV shows like Empire and Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It.
