About Radical Face
How the Name Started
Ben Cooper picked the name Radical Face after seeing it on a flyer. He later found out it was for a "Radical Face-Lift" (a type of surgery), but the word "lift" had been torn off. So, he just used "Radical Face."
Early Music Years (2003–2010)
Ben Cooper's first album as Radical Face was The Junkyard Chandelier in 2003. This album was not officially sold, but you could find it online for free. His first official album, Ghost, came out in 2007.
The Family Tree Story (2010–2016)
In 2010, Ben Cooper released an EP (a shorter album) called Touch The Sky. This was a preview for a big project: a series of three albums called The Family Tree.
These albums tell the story of a made-up family, the Northcotes, over four generations. The stories happen in the 1800s and early 1900s. The trilogy has more than 30 songs and talks about the family's adventures, including war, changes, and even some family members having special powers. Ben used only instruments that would have been around during those times to make the music sound just right.
The first album in the series, The Roots, was released in 2011. Then came The Branches in 2013, and The Leaves in 2016. Ben also released four EPs called The Bastards with songs that didn't quite fit on the main albums.
Instrumental Music and EPs (2016–2023)
In 2018, Radical Face released an album called Missing Film. This album is all instrumental, meaning it has no singing. Ben made it so that independent filmmakers could use the songs in their movies without having to pay extra fees.
Since 2017, Radical Face has also released several EPs. One of them was SunnMoonnEclippse in 2017, which had a special video online. From August 2020 to February 2021, Ben sent out a new song each month through a mailer called "Hidden Hollow." These six songs were later put together as the “Hidden Hollow, Vol. 1 EP.”
A New Story: A Light in the Woods (2023-Present)
A Light in the Woods is a big project that combines music, writing, and art to create a fairy tale. Ben Cooper started working on it in 2018. It's a narrated story with music, songs, and animated paintings. He uses this project to explore fears and big questions about life.
The story is set in a fantasy world with creatures called "walking wood." These beings are born from giant trees and usually stay inside their villages. The main character, Vagus, is a walking wood who dreams of exploring beyond his village walls. He then goes on a dangerous journey into the mysterious woods.
The first part of this story, called Hidden Hollow, was released on October 20, 2023. It included three songs, which were also released separately. When finished, the story is planned to have 28 songs, over 50 pieces of background music, and about 1000 animated paintings. It will be split into six long videos, like books.
