About Radoje Kontić
Early Life and Career
Radoje Kontić was born in Nikšić, which was part of Yugoslavia at the time and is now in Montenegro. Like many people who became politicians in Yugoslavia, he started his career working in state-owned companies. He worked at the Nikšić steel mill during the late 1960s and 1970s. A steel mill is a factory where steel is made.
In 1978, he became a member of the Executive Council of the Socialist Republic of Montenegro. This was a big step into full-time politics. The Executive Council was like the government's main decision-making body in that part of Yugoslavia.
Becoming a Leader
Kontić became the last Chairman of the Executive Council of the Socialist Republic of Montenegro. He held this position from 1989 to 1991. He got this role during a time of big political changes in Montenegro in January 1989. These changes were part of what was called the "anti-bureaucratic revolution," which was a movement to change how the government worked.
Later, he became the Prime Minister of Yugoslavia. He served from February 9, 1993, until May 19, 1998. He was a member of the League of Communists of Montenegro and later joined the Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro.
End of His Term
Radoje Kontić's time as Prime Minister ended when he lost a "no-confidence vote." This means that the lawmakers in the government decided they no longer supported him as Prime Minister. He lost this vote because he did not prevent a certain political party from winning an election in Montenegro.
