Rafael "Rafi" Peretz was born on January 7, 1956. He is an Israeli Orthodox rabbi and a former politician. He was a military officer and a helicopter pilot. Peretz also served as the Chief Military Rabbi for the Israel Defense Forces. He led the Jewish Home political party.
Early Life and Education
Rafi Peretz was born in Jerusalem, Israel. His parents came from Moroccan-Jewish families. He grew up in the Kiryat HaYovel area of Western Jerusalem.
He studied at two important religious schools: Mercaz HaRav and Yeshivat HaKotel. He later received his semikhah (ordination) from the Chief Rabbinate of Israel. This means he became a certified rabbi.
Military Service
Peretz had a long career in the military. He was a major in the Israeli Air Force, where he flew helicopters. He also led a special pre-military academy in Yated. He started this academy in 1993.
In 2010, he became the Chief Military Rabbi. This is a very important role in the Israel Defense Forces. He served in this position until 2016. He was promoted to the rank of brigadier general during his service.
Political Career
Peretz became the leader of the Jewish Home party in February 2019. His party joined a group called the Union of the Right-Wing Parties. He was the main candidate for this group in the April 2019 elections. He was elected to the Knesset, which is Israel's parliament.
In 2019, Peretz was chosen to be the interim Minister of Education. This means he was in charge of education for a short time.
In May 2020, Peretz left the Yamina political group. He then joined the government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He became the Minister of Jerusalem Affairs and Heritage. In January 2021, he announced that he was leaving politics.
Personal Life
Rafi Peretz is married and has 12 children. Before 2005, he lived in a community called Bnei Atzmon in Gush Katif. After the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in 2005, he moved. He now lives in Naveh, a village that was started in 2008 by people who used to live in Gush Katif.
