He was best known for singing songs from the Gita Govinda. This is a famous poem by Jayadeva. Raghunath Panigrahi also sang to support his wife, Sanjukta Panigrahi. She was a legendary Odissi dancer. He was sometimes called 'Gitagobinda Panigrahi' because of his love for the Gita Govinda.

His father collected old Odissi songs from the Jagannatha Temple in Puri. Later, Raghunath learned more from other teachers.

He also sang in movies in different languages. These included Odia, Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu. He left a promising career in film music. They performed together from the 1960s to the 1990s.

After Sanjukta passed away in 1997, he worked with Nrityagram. This is a famous dance village. He created music for many of their shows. In 1999, he started the 'Sanjukta Panigrahi Memorial Trust'. This trust helps promote Odissi dance. Every year, the trust gives scholarships to young dancers. It also gives awards to excellent Odissi dancers.
