About Rahim Fortune's Life and Work
Early Life and Photography Journey
Rahim Fortune was born in Austin, Texas. He grew up in nearby Kyle, Texas, and also in the Chickasaw Nation in Oklahoma. His mother is Chickasaw, and his father is African American. Rahim learned photography on his own, without going to a special school for it.
Exploring the South with Oklahoma
His first book, Oklahoma (published in 2020), was put together by Rahim himself. He created this two-part book during trips back to Tupelo, Oklahoma. This is where he and his sister lived with their mother when they were younger. The photos capture moments from these visits.
I Can't Stand to See You Cry and Its Themes
Rahim's second book, I Can't Stand to See You Cry (2021), explores important life events. It touches on a parent's illness and passing, the COVID-19 pandemic, and protests for fairness and equality. Most of these photos were taken in Texas and nearby states during 2020.
The book features close-up black and white pictures of both strangers and his own family. It also shows city scenes, interesting textures, and old, empty buildings. Rahim used a special medium format film camera to create these images.
Other Photography Projects
Rahim Fortune has also photographed Black and Indigenous people living near water in America. He captured the Bronner Bros. Hair Show in Atlanta. This is a big event where people show off amazing Black hair styles. He has also taken street style portraits in New York City using an iPhone. Sometimes, he takes pictures for The New York Times newspaper. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.
