The Railroad Avenue Historic District is a special area in Las Vegas, New Mexico. It's like a time capsule, showing how the town looked and worked a long time ago. This district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's recognized as important to American history.

The district covers three blocks of Railroad Avenue and one block of Lincoln Avenue. The buildings here were built between 1879 and 1920. They are all connected to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. When the railway arrived, it brought a lot of growth and changes to Las Vegas. These buildings show that exciting time!

Many interesting buildings make up the Railroad Avenue Historic District. Each one has its own story and unique style.

The Castañeda Hotel

The Castañeda Hotel is a two-story brick building built in 1899. It has a cool design called Mission Revival. You can see an arcade, a courtyard, and even a tower! This hotel was a very important stop for travelers on the Santa Fe Railway.

Santa Fe Depot

The Santa Fe Depot is the old train station itself. It was also built in 1899 and has the same Mission Revival style as the hotel. This two-story brick building was the main hub for people arriving and leaving Las Vegas by train.

Gross Kelly Mercantile Building

The Gross Kelly Mercantile Building was built in 1898. It's a two-story brick building with a Renaissance Revival style. It also has a warehouse attached. A "mercantile" building was like a big general store where people could buy many different things.

Golden Rule Furnishings

Built in 1881, the Golden Rule Furnishings building is made of stone with brick on the front. It has two stories and unique twisted cast iron columns. This building was likely a furniture store, helping people set up their homes in the growing town.

Wells Fargo Building

The Wells Fargo Building was constructed in 1908. It's a three-story brick building with a Neoclassical Revival style. Wells Fargo was a famous company known for banking and delivering goods, especially in the Old West.

Center Block

The Center Block was a two-story brick building with a round tower, built in 1899. It had a style called Richardsonian Romanesque. Sadly, this building collapsed during a rainstorm in 2006 and was later taken down.

Strousse and Bacharach Building

This two-story brick building was built around 1900. It's a commercial building, meaning it was used for businesses. It has three bays, which are sections of the building's front.

Rawlins Building

The Rawlins Building was built between 1899 and 1902. It's a two-story brick building with a cast iron front. It has an Neoclassical Revival style. For a time, this building was a dormitory for the famous Harvey Girls. These women worked at the Castañeda Hotel, providing excellent service to travelers.
