Jules Auguste Muraire (born December 18, 1883 – died September 20, 1946) was a famous French actor. He was known by his stage name, Raimu. He is most remembered for playing the character César in a popular series of three movies. These movies were called the 'Marseilles trilogy'. They included Marius, Fanny, and César.
Life and Acting Career
Jules Muraire was born in a city called Toulon in France. He started acting on stage there in 1899. A big music hall star named Félix Mayol noticed him. In 1908, Raimu got a chance to perform in Paris. He mostly worked in funny plays and shows.
In 1916, a writer and director named Sacha Guitry gave him important roles. Raimu performed in famous places like the Folies Bergère. Besides his stage work, Raimu also became a successful film actor. Sometimes, he used the name Jules Raimu in movies.
In 1928, he starred in an operetta called Coups de roulis. An operetta is like a small opera with speaking parts. The next year, he became even more famous. He played the main role in a stage play by Marcel Pagnol called Marius.
At first, Raimu did not want to act in movies. He had a bad experience with his first film role. But he agreed to be in Guitry's film Le Blanc et le Noir. A year later, he played his Marius role again in a movie. By the time he was in his late forties, Raimu was one of France's most respected actors. Famous actors like Alec Guinness and Marlene Dietrich admired him greatly. Even Orson Welles thought he was an amazing actor.
Family Life
Raimu married Esther Metayer in 1936. She was born in 1905 and passed away in 1977. He also had a daughter named Paulette Brun. She was born in 1925 and died in 1992.
His Passing
Raimu passed away on September 20, 1946. He had a heart attack. This happened because of problems with the medicine used to make him sleep during a small leg operation. He was at the American Hospital of Paris in Neuilly-sur-Seine when he died.
His Legacy
Raimu was buried in the cemetery in Toulon. A movie theater in Toulon is named after him, called Cinéma Raimu Toulon.
In 1961, the French government honored him. They put his picture on a postage stamp. His granddaughter, Isabelle Nohain, created a small museum for him. It is in the town of Cogolin in France.
