He received the Maha Vir Chakra, which is India's second-highest award for bravery. Early life and family
Raj Mohan Vohra was born in Shimla, India, on May 7, 1932. His father's name was Bakshi Sant Ram. Raj Mohan went to St. Edward's School in Shimla.
He had four brothers, and all of them joined the Indian Army. They all served in the Indian Armoured Corps, which uses tanks. All five brothers became high-ranking officers, with two becoming Major Generals and three becoming Lieutenant Generals.
Military career
Raj Mohan Vohra joined the army on December 4, 1952. He became an officer in a unit called 14 Horse. In 1963, when he was a major, he was chosen to attend a special training course at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington. He also fought in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 in the Punjab area.
Bravery in the 1971 War
During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, Raj Mohan Vohra was a lieutenant colonel. He was in charge of the 4 Horse regiment in the Shakargarh area.
On December 5, his regiment led the attack for the 54th Infantry Division. They captured many important places like Bhairo Nath and Chakra. These places were strongly defended with tanks, missiles, and minefields.
The Battle of Basantar
During the Battle of Basantar, his regiment faced very strong attacks from the enemy. Even with heavy fighting, his soldiers, inspired by his courage, destroyed 27 enemy tanks. His unit had very few losses. For his amazing bravery and leadership, he was given the Maha Vir Chakra.
Maha Vir Chakra award
The award for the Maha Vir Chakra said that Lieutenant Colonel Raj Mohan Vohra showed great courage. It mentioned how he led his regiment to capture many strong enemy positions. He often went to the front lines himself, which inspired his soldiers. During the Battle of Basantar, his personal example helped his regiment stand strong against repeated enemy tank attacks. They destroyed 27 enemy tanks while keeping their own losses very low.
After the war, Raj Mohan Vohra became a General Officer. He commanded the Army War College, Mhow, a training center for army officers. His brother, Inder Mohan Vohra, also commanded this college. From 1988 to 1990, Raj Mohan Vohra was the top commander of the Eastern Command of the Indian Army.
