Ralph Grayham Gubbins (born January 31, 1932 – died September 11, 2011) was an English professional football player. He played as an inside forward, which is a position in football. Ralph played in almost 250 games in the Football League for three different teams. This was between the years 1952 and 1964. After that, he played for teams outside the main league system.
Ralph Gubbins' Football Journey
Ralph was born in a town called Ellesmere Port, England. He played for several well-known teams in the Football League. These included Bolton Wanderers, Hull City, and Tranmere Rovers. Later, he also played for Wigan Athletic, which was a non-league team at the time.
Time at Bolton Wanderers
While playing for Bolton, Ralph had a very important moment. He stepped in for the famous player Nat Lofthouse in the 1958 FA Cup Semi-final match. Nat was injured, so Ralph got to play. In that big game, Ralph scored both goals! His goals helped send Bolton to the final match.
Even though Ralph helped them get there, Nat Lofthouse was well enough to play in the final. Bolton Wanderers went on to win the FA Cup that year.
Later Career
After his time in the Football League, Ralph played for Wigan Athletic. He spent one season with them in the Cheshire County League. During that season, he scored 7 goals in 30 league games.
