Ramón Tamames Gómez (born 1 November 1933) is a well-known Spanish economist and former politician. He has played an important role in Spain's history, especially after the country became a democracy.

He was a member of the Congress of Deputies (like the Spanish parliament) and the City Council of Madrid (the local government for Madrid). This was during the first years after Spain changed from a dictatorship to a democracy. He was a member of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) for a long time. Later, he left that party and helped start new political groups like the Progressive Federation (FP) and United Left (IU). He stopped being active in politics in 1989. In 2023, when he was 89 years old, he was suggested as a candidate for prime minister of Spain. This happened during a special vote called a vote of no confidence, which was proposed by the Vox political party.

About Ramón Tamames

Political Career and Parties

In 1977, he was elected to the Congress of Deputies in Spain's first democratic elections. This was a big step for Spain. In 1979, he was also elected to the City Council of Madrid. The PCE worked with another party, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). Their leader, Enrique Tierno Galván, became the mayor of Madrid, and Tamames became his first deputy.

Tamames left the PCE in 1981. In 1984, he started his own political group called the Progressive Federation (FP). He also helped create the United Left (IU) party. He was elected to Congress again in 1986.

In 1989, he joined another party called the Democratic and Social Centre (CDS). This party was led by Adolfo Suárez, who used to be the prime minister. After a few months, Tamames decided to leave politics.

In February 2023, when he was 89 years old, Tamames agreed to be a candidate for prime minister. This happened during a special vote called a motion of no confidence. The Vox party proposed this vote to try and remove the current government of Pedro Sánchez.
