Ramón Tamames Gómez was born on November 1, 1933. He is a well-known Spanish economist and a former politician.

He was a member of Spain's main parliament, the Congress of Deputies, and also worked for the City Council of Madrid. This was during the early years after Spain became a democracy. He was a member of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) for a long time. He left the PCE in 1982 and helped create new political groups like the Progressive Federation (FP) and the United Left (IU). He stopped being active in politics in 1989 after a short time with the Democratic and Social Centre (CDS) party. In 2023, when he was 89 years old, he was suggested as a candidate for prime minister of Spain during a special vote called a vote of no confidence. This vote happens when some politicians want to remove the current prime minister.

Early Life and Education

Ramón Tamames was born in Madrid, Spain. He grew up in a family with five children. His father was a surgeon. Ramón studied at the Lycée Français de Madrid. He then went on to earn degrees in law and economics in Madrid. He also studied at the famous London School of Economics in London, England. He has three children with his wife, Carmen Prieto-Castro.

Political Career and Roles

Tamames joined the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) in 1956, even though it was not allowed at the time. In 1976, he became part of the party's main leadership. He was elected to the Congress of Deputies in 1977, which was the first democratic election in Spain after a long time.

In 1979, he was elected to the City Council of Madrid. This was also the first democratic election for the city council. The PCE worked with another party, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). The leader of the PSOE, Enrique Tierno Galván, became the mayor, and Tamames became his first deputy, helping to lead the city.

In 1981, Ramón Tamames left the PCE because he had disagreements with the party's leader, Santiago Carrillo. In 1984, he started his own political group called the Progressive Federation (FP). He also helped create the United Left (IU) and was elected to Congress again in 1986.

In 1989, he joined the Democratic and Social Centre (CDS) party, which was led by former Prime Minister Adolfo Suárez. He decided not to run for election that year and then left politics.

Vote of No Confidence in 2023

In February 2023, when Ramón Tamames was 89 years old, he agreed to be an independent candidate for prime minister. This happened because the Vox political party proposed a motion of no confidence against the government of Pedro Sánchez. A motion of no confidence is a way for politicians to try and remove the current leader and government.

The vote took place on March 22, 2023. The motion did not pass. There were 52 votes in favor (from Vox and one other politician), 91 politicians chose not to vote, and 201 politicians voted against the motion.
