Ramon Cugat Bertomeu (born August 25, 1950) is a famous Spanish surgeon. He specializes in helping people with bone and joint problems. He is especially known for treating athletes, like football players.

Dr. Cugat has helped many well-known players from teams like FC Barcelona and Manchester City. Some of these players include Pep Guardiola, Xavi, Andrés Iniesta, and Kevin de Bruyne. He uses special techniques like arthroscopy to fix injuries.

Ramon Cugat works at the Hospital Quiron Barcelona. He also leads the Garcia Cugat Foundation, which does important research. This research helps find new ways to heal injuries. He is also a professor at the University of Barcelona.

Biography

Early Life and Football

Ramon Cugat was born in L'Aldea, Spain, on August 25, 1950. He grew up in a farming family. When he was 15, he moved to Barcelona in 1965. There, he played for the youth team of FC Barcelona until 1971.

In 1969, he started studying medicine at the University of Barcelona. He became interested in sports medicine. He learned a lot from Dr. Jose Garcia Cugat, who started the Spanish Arthroscopy Association. By 1975, Ramon Cugat had finished his medical degree. He then became a specialist in bone and trauma surgery. He also traveled to England and the United States to learn more about arthroscopy.

Medical Career Highlights

In 1980, Dr. Cugat began working with Dr. Bertram Zarins at Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States. Dr. Zarins was a leader in sports medicine at Harvard University. Ramon Cugat helped start the Spanish Arthroscopy Association in 1982. He was also its president from 1993 to 1995.

In 1990, he became a professor at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Barcelona. He also worked with the American Football Team of Barcelona Dragons. In 1992, he was part of the team of orthopedic surgeons for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

From 1992 to 2004, he worked at the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona. He led the Arthroscopic Surgery Unit there. In 2007, he joined Hospital Quiron Barcelona. He is still a co-director of the Orthopaedic Surgery and Trauma Department there today.

Personal Life

Ramon Cugat is married to Montserrat Garcia Balletbó. She is a specialist in pathology and researches biological therapies. They have three children: Debora, Coco, and Pepe.

Academic Work

Dr. Cugat has been a part of important international groups. From 1989 to 1993, he was on the board of the International Arthroscopy Association. This group later became the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS). He often teaches at international meetings in many countries.

Since 1999, his clinic in Barcelona has been a special teaching center for ISAKOS. Many students from all over the world visit his center each year to learn from him. In 2016, Dr. Ramon Cugat became a full member of the Royal European Academy of Doctors.

Medical Research

In the early 2000s, Dr. Cugat started researching regenerative medicine. This is about helping the body heal itself. He worked with Dr. Eduardo Anitua and Mikel Sanchez on using Plasma Rich in Growth factors (PRGF). This treatment helps injuries heal faster.

He also worked with animal doctors to study these treatments. This led to the creation of the Garcia Cugat Foundation for Biomedical Research in 2007. He is the chairman of this foundation.

Since 2010, the Garcia Cugat Foundation has been researching stem cells. Stem cells are special cells that can turn into different types of cells. They can help repair damaged muscles and bones. This research started with animals and then moved to humans in 2013.
