Ramona's Adventures

Summer Fun and Family Changes

Ramona spends her summer playing with her friend Howie Kemp. They play a game called "Brick Factory." They pound old bricks into dust. This game makes Ramona feel strong and important. She doesn't often feel this way as the youngest in her family.

Ramona wants to be brave and grown-up. She tries to defend her older sister, Beezus. Some boys tease Beezus about her nickname. Ramona tells them they will get into trouble for it. But Beezus is not happy. She feels embarrassed by Ramona's help.

As summer ends, Ramona's mother gets a part-time job. Workers also add a new bedroom to their house. This is because Beezus and Ramona often argue when sharing a room. Beezus and Ramona will take turns using the new room. Ramona gets to use it first. She finds it a bit scary to sleep alone in the new room.

Starting First Grade

When first grade begins, Ramona starts learning to read. She soon feels that her teacher, Mrs. Griggs, does not like her. Ramona also seems to get into trouble often.

One day, the class makes paper-bag owls for Parents' Night. Ramona sees Susan, who she didn't get along with in kindergarten. Susan copies Ramona's owl design. Mrs. Griggs sees Susan's owl first. She shows it off to the class. Ramona is very upset that her owl is no longer special. She destroys both owls.

The next day, Ramona has to say sorry to Susan. She does this in front of the whole class. After that, her classmates are kind to her. This makes things better.

The Brave Nickname

One morning, a big dog chases Ramona on her way to school. She takes off her shoe and throws it at the dog. The dog picks up her shoe and runs away with it. Ramona has to limp to school with only one shoe.

That same morning, Mrs. Griggs chooses Ramona to lead the flag salute. Mrs. Griggs then sees that Ramona is only wearing one shoe. Ramona uses her quick thinking to handle the situation. When her shoe is returned, the school secretary praises her bravery. This is how Ramona gets her nickname, "the Brave."
