Ramona the Pest is a popular book by Beverly Cleary. It is the second book in the Ramona series. This book is special because it's the first one where Ramona Quimby is the main character! It tells all about Ramona's adventures during her first few months in kindergarten. Many people, including her older sister Beezus, sometimes call Ramona a "pest." Ramona the Pest was first published in 1968. The first edition had pictures drawn by Louis Darling. Other artists have drawn new pictures for the book since then, like Alan Tiegreen, Tracy Dockray, and Jacqueline Rogers.

Ramona's Kindergarten Adventures
Starting School
Ramona Quimby is super excited to start kindergarten! She is a little older now than in the book Beezus and Ramona. Even though Ramona tries to be good, trouble often seems to find her. She doesn't mean to cause problems, but things just happen!
Her teacher is Miss Binney, and Ramona really likes her. Miss Binney often praises Ramona's interesting drawings. She also likes Ramona's nice, fat letter 'Q's.
The Curl Incident
In Ramona's class, there is a girl named Susan. Susan has long, bouncy curls. Ramona really, really wants to pull one of those curls. She wants to see it bounce back and forth! When Ramona finally pulls a curl, she gets sent to the bench. She has to stay there until recess is over.
Chasing Davy
Another new person in Ramona's class is a boy named Davy. Ramona likes to chase him during recess. She tries to catch him and give him a kiss. She finally gets to kiss him during the Halloween parade! Ramona dresses up as "the baddest witch in the world" for the parade.
Trouble in Class
Ramona tries her best in kindergarten, but it's not always easy. Sitting quietly during "seat work" is very hard for her. She has to keep her eyes on her own paper. But Ramona is too curious! She wants to see what everyone else is doing.
The Substitute Teacher
Kindergarten is going well until one day a substitute teacher comes. Ramona does not want to go to class without Miss Binney. So, she hides behind the trash cans with a dog named Ribsy. Her sister Beezus finds her and takes her to the principal's office. Ramona still has to go to class, even with the substitute.
Being Sent Home
One day, Susan calls Ramona a "pest." Ramona gets upset and pulls Susan's curls again. Miss Binney sends Ramona home from school. She tells Ramona she can't come back until she can behave. Ramona thinks Miss Binney doesn't like her anymore. She refuses to go back to school. Nothing anyone says can change her mind.
Then, Ramona gets a letter from Miss Binney. The letter has the tooth Ramona lost at school the day she was sent home. Ramona realizes that Miss Binney must still like her! She is happy to go back to kindergarten.
