Ramsay's Best Restaurant was a TV show where famous British chef Gordon Ramsay searched for the best restaurant in Britain. It was shown on Channel 4. Over 12,000 restaurants wanted to be on the show, but Ramsay picked only 16 to start the competition.
The competition started with 16 restaurants, grouped into eight pairs. Each pair had restaurants serving the same type of food. The winners moved on to the semi-finals, and then to the grand final. The show had nine episodes, running from September to November 2010.
In the big final on November 9, 2010, the winner was Casamia. This restaurant in Bristol has a special Michelin star. The runner-up was Prashad, an Indian vegetarian restaurant from Bradford.

How the Competition Worked
The show had different rounds to find the best restaurant. Here's how it worked:
Early Rounds: Testing Restaurants
In the first part of the competition, two restaurants from the same food type (like Italian or Indian) competed. They faced three challenges:
- Serving Many Diners: Thirty people came to each restaurant and ordered food all at once. The restaurant had to serve everyone a full meal within two hours. This tested how fast and organized they were.
- Undercover Diner: A secret diner visited each restaurant. This diner would sometimes make difficult requests or have problems. This helped Ramsay see how well the staff handled tricky situations and kept customers happy.
- Chef's Challenge: The chefs from both restaurants had to cook a special dish. Gordon Ramsay chose the main ingredient for this dish. They served it to twenty guests, including their own staff and important visitors, at Ramsay's own restaurant in Chelsea, London. Ramsay then tasted the dishes and picked the winner for that episode.
Quarter-Finals: Moving Forward
After the first rounds, eight restaurants made it to the quarter-finals. An undercover diner again checked the food and service quality. Ramsay looked at what the secret diners found. Based on this, he chose four restaurants to move on to the semi-finals.
Semi-Finals: Pop-Up Restaurants
In the semi-finals, Ramsay, along with other chefs like Angela Hartnett, would visit the restaurants without warning. They would eat a meal and check the food and service. Sometimes, they had a time limit, like 90 minutes, to see how the restaurant handled pressure.
Ramsay also sent a second group of people to eat at the same time. This was to make sure all customers got the same great service and food.
Then, each restaurant got a space in North London, £2000, and a tour of Ramsay's favorite food markets. They had to set up and run a temporary "pop-up" restaurant for one evening. Guests paid what they thought the meal was worth. Ramsay then picked the two best restaurants to go to the final.
The Grand Final: Who Wins?
For the grand final, the last two restaurants cooked at Petrus, which is another one of Gordon Ramsay's restaurants in central London. They cooked for many guests, including chefs and staff from restaurants that had been eliminated earlier.
The challenge was to create a full three-course meal that showed their passion for cooking. Angela Hartnett and other experts watched them closely from a special table in the kitchen. Ramsay tasted all the dishes and talked to his guests and the experts. Finally, he chose the winning restaurant!
