Ramón de Castellazuelo: A Builder Bishop

As a bishop, Ramón de Castellazuelo continued a big construction project in the city of Zaragoza. This project was to build the important Cathedral of Zaragoza. His predecessor, another bishop named Pedro Tarroja, had started this work.

Improving Zaragoza Cathedral

The building project was special because it kept an old mosque structure. A mosque is a place of worship for followers of Islam. This old mosque was then changed into a church. Ramón de Castellazuelo's team added new parts to it. They built a main section called a "head," five rounded parts called apses, and a grand entrance. This doorway was protected by two square towers on either side.

Ramón de Castellazuelo was not only a church leader but also played a part in important events of his time.

Supporting King Peter II

In 1212, he joined King Pedro III of Aragon in a military campaign. A campaign is a series of military actions. This one was against an area called Rincón de Ademuz. Ramón de Castellazuelo took part in two important sieges during this time. A siege is when an army surrounds a place to try and capture it. He was present during the sieges of Al-Dāmūs and Castellfabib.
