Ranchito de Santa Fe facts for kids
Ranchito de Santa Fe was a historic piece of land in California. It was a Mexican land grant, which means the Mexican government gave out this large area of land. The grant covered about 165.76-acre (0.6708 km2) of land. Today, parts of this land are in the southern part of San Luis Obispo. Other parts are east of U.S. Route 101 in San Luis Obispo County, California.
History of Ranchito de Santa Fe
Ranchito de Santa Fe was officially granted on September 18, 1842. The person who granted it was Governor Juan Alvarado. He was the governor of Alta California at that time. The land was given to a person named Victor Linares.
Victor Linares' Claim
Victor Linares made a claim for this land on February 12, 1852. He claimed an area of 1,000 varas square. A "vara" was an old unit of measurement, like a yard. A special group called a commission looked at his claim. They confirmed his ownership on March 14, 1853. Later, a district court also confirmed it on January 14, 1857. An appeal about the land was stopped on June 3, 1859. This meant Linares' ownership was final.
Location of the Ranchito
The Ranchito de Santa Fe was located next to San Luis Creek. It was south of the lands belonging to the Mission. It also sat along the road that connected the Mission to the port of San Luis Obispo. The Ranchito shared a border with the Mission lands of Rancho La Laguna on its western side.
