Honoring Ranger History
The idea for this memorial came from two Rangers. They wanted a lasting tribute. This tribute would show the important work Rangers have done. It would honor their service to the United States and its allies. Construction finished in 1994. It featured about 2,456 polished stones. In 1996, more features were added. These included 2,200 additional stones. New lighting and a sprinkler system were also installed. A system to help visitors find specific Rangers' stones was also put in place.
What Makes the Memorial Special?
The Famous Ranger Knife
At the center of the memorial stands a large Fairbairn–Sykes fighting knife. It sits between two tall marble pillars. This knife is a symbol of the Rangers. It was first given to British Commandos. Later, soldiers of the first U.S. Ranger Battalion used it. They trained with the British in Achnacarry, Scotland. This knife became a key tool for airborne troops. It was also used by other special operations units during World War II.
The Unique Ranger Walkway
A special pathway leads to the memorial's center. This path is made of many stones. Former and current Rangers bought these stones. Each stone shows their unit information. What's interesting is that no rank is shown. Instead, the word "Ranger" is the first line. This shows that all Rangers are equal in their service.
Earning a Place on the Walk
Getting a stone on the "Ranger Walk" has strict rules. Not everyone can have one. Anyone can buy a stone. However, the stone must honor a qualified Ranger. This means the person must have completed the tough Ranger training. It's a way to recognize their dedication and bravery.
