Ransom Township was first created in 1849. Back then, it was part of Luzerne County. It was formed from parts of two other townships: Exeter and Newton.

The township got its name from Samuel Ransom. He was a brave captain who fought and died in the Battle of Wyoming. This important battle happened nearby. Later, in 1878, Ransom Township became part of the new Lackawanna County.
