Rasmus Lerdorf was born on November 22, 1968. He is a computer programmer from Denmark and Canada. He is best known for creating the first versions of the PHP computer language.
PHP is a very important language used to build many websites and web applications. Rasmus Lerdorf also helped inspire and develop later versions of PHP. He still helps with the project today.
Early Life and School
Rasmus Lerdorf was born on Disko Island in Greenland. When he was young, his family moved to Denmark. In 1980, they moved to Canada. They later settled in King City, Ontario, in 1983.
He finished high school at King City Secondary School in 1988. In 1993, he graduated from the University of Waterloo. He earned a degree in Systems Design Engineering. Before PHP, he also helped improve other computer systems. For example, he worked on the Apache HTTP Server.
Rasmus Lerdorf's Career
From 2002 to 2009, Rasmus Lerdorf worked at Yahoo! Inc.. He was an engineer who helped build their computer systems. In 2010, he joined a company called WePay. There, he helped create their application programming interface, which lets different computer programs talk to each other.
During 2011, he worked as a consultant, giving advice to new companies. On February 22, 2012, he announced that he had joined Etsy. Etsy is a popular online marketplace. In July 2013, Lerdorf also became a senior advisor for Jelastic. He helped them develop new computer technology.
Rasmus Lerdorf often speaks at computer conferences around the world. These are called Open Source conferences. He talks about how to make computer programs better and safer. He has also spoken at the WeAreDevelopers Conferences in 2017 and 2019. He shared stories about the history of PHP and its new versions.
Awards and Recognition
In 2003, Rasmus Lerdorf received a special award. The MIT Technology Review named him one of the top 100 innovators in the world. He was recognized as one of the best innovators under the age of 35.
