Rasmus Lerdorf (born on November 22, 1968) is a Danish-Canadian computer programmer. He is best known for creating the first versions of the PHP programming language. PHP is a very popular language used to build websites and web applications. Rasmus helped start PHP and still works on it with other developers today.

Early Life and Learning
Rasmus Lerdorf was born on Disko Island in Greenland. When he was young, his family moved to Denmark. In 1980, his family moved again, this time to Canada. They later settled in King City, Ontario in 1983.
School and University
Rasmus finished high school at King City Secondary School in 1988. He then went to the University of Waterloo. In 1993, he earned a degree in Systems Design Engineering. This degree taught him how to design complex systems.
Early Contributions to Web Technology
Before creating PHP, Rasmus helped with other important web tools. He contributed to the Apache HTTP Server, which is a program that delivers web pages. He also added a special feature called the LIMIT clause to a database system called mSQL. This feature helps to get only a certain number of results from a database. He released the first version of PHP in 1995.
Career Journey
Rasmus Lerdorf has worked for several big technology companies. From September 2002 to November 2009, he worked at Yahoo! Inc.. There, he was an engineer helping to build their main computer systems.
Working with Startups
In 2010, Rasmus joined a company called WePay. He helped them create their application programming interface, which allows different computer programs to talk to each other. Throughout 2011, he worked as a consultant, giving advice to new technology companies. On February 22, 2012, he announced that he had joined Etsy, an online marketplace for handmade goods. In July 2013, Rasmus also became a senior advisor for Jelastic, helping them develop new cloud technology.
Speaking at Conferences
Rasmus Lerdorf often speaks at conferences about Open Source software. Open Source means that the computer code is free for anyone to use and change. At one conference in 2007, he showed how some popular projects had security weaknesses. He also spoke at the WeAreDevelopers Conferences in 2017 and 2019. He talked about how PHP started and how it has grown over 25 years.
Special Recognition
In 2003, Rasmus Lerdorf received a special award. He was named one of the top 100 innovators in the world under the age of 35 by MIT Technology Review. This award recognized his important work in technology.
