Rasmus Ristolainen (born 27 October 1994) is a professional ice hockey player from Finland. He plays as a defenceman for the Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was chosen as the eighth overall pick by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2013 NHL draft.
Playing in the NHL
Rasmus Ristolainen started his NHL career with the Buffalo Sabres on 2 October 2013. This was on the very first night of the 2013–14 season. He scored his first goal in the NHL on 25 October, helping his team win against the Florida Panthers.
On 10 December 2015, Rasmus achieved his first NHL hat-trick. This means he scored three goals in one game! He was the first defenceman for the Sabres to score a hat-trick since the famous player Phil Housley did it back in the 1987–88 season.
On 21 March 2017, Ristolainen was suspended for three games. This happened after a play where he checked a player from the Pittsburgh Penguins, Jake Guentzel, who then got injured.
On 23 July 2021, Rasmus Ristolainen was traded from the Sabres to the Philadelphia Flyers. In return, the Sabres received player Robert Hägg, a first-round draft pick from 2021, and a second-round draft pick from 2023. On 10 March 2022, he signed a new five-year contract to continue playing with the Flyers.
Playing for Finland
Rasmus Ristolainen has also played for his home country, Finland, in international tournaments. On 5 January 2014, he scored the winning goal in overtime during the final game of the 2014 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. This important goal was against the previously undefeated team from Sweden. His goal helped Finland win the gold medal!
