The Rawlins Residential Historic District is a special area in Rawlins, Wyoming. It's filled with many old houses built a long time ago, between 1880 and 1915. This district is right next to the main shopping area of Rawlins. It covers about 15 blocks and shows off different styles of homes from the past.

Exploring the Rawlins Historic District

This historic district covers about 27 acres. It is home to many small houses. These homes were built between 1880 and 1915. The area used to be part of land owned by the Union Pacific Railroad.

Unique Stone Features

One cool thing about these houses is how they use local stone. This stone was dug up right from the area around Rawlins. You can see it in the foundations of the houses. It's also used in the walls that separate yards. This gives the district a very special look.

Buildings in the District

Besides the many homes, there is also a church in the district. It is called St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The buildings here show different types of architecture. These include the fancy Queen Anne style, cozy cottage styles, and practical bungalow styles.

Famous Homes and Residents

One of the most famous houses is the George Ferris Mansion. It is located at 607 West Maple. George Ferris built this large, beautiful Queen Anne style home. He made his money from mining at the Ferris-Haggarty Mine Site. This mine is also a historic place.

Many important people lived in this district. This included people who raised sheep and worked as bankers. They built their homes here, adding to the district's unique history.

National Recognition

The Rawlins Residential Historic District is important. It was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 9, 1999. This means it is recognized as a place worth preserving for future generations.
