The History of Ray, Ohio

The community of Ray has an interesting history, including a few name changes over the years. It was first planned out in the mid-1800s.

How Ray Was Started

Ray was originally known as Raysville. It was officially "platted" in 1853. When a community is platted, it means someone draws up a map showing how the streets and building lots will be laid out. This planning was done by a person named Moses Ray. He named the new community after his own family.

Name Changes Over Time

After being called Raysville, the community's name was shortened to Rays for a while. A post office was set up there in 1856, using the name Rays. Later, in 1893, the name was changed one more time to what it is today: Ray.
