Ray Lampe's Journey to BBQ Stardom
Ray Lampe grew up in Chicago. For 25 years, he worked in his family's trucking business. But he always loved cooking, especially barbecue!
From Hobby to Professional Chef
In the early 1980s, Ray started competing in barbecue contests. He was just an amateur at first, but he loved it. In 2000, he moved to Florida. There, he became a well-known expert in outdoor cooking.
Opening His Own Restaurant
In 2008, Ray worked as the main chef at a restaurant called Southern Hospitality in New York City. This restaurant was owned by singer Justin Timberlake. Ray helped make the food even better there.
Later, in June 2016, Ray announced exciting news. He was opening his own restaurant! He partnered with Suzanne and Roger Perry, who own other popular restaurants. His new place is called Dr. BBQ. It opened in St. Petersburg, Florida, in an area called the Edge District.
Dr. BBQ on Television
Ray Lampe is also a familiar face on TV. He has been a judge on several cooking shows. This means he gets to taste and rate the food made by other chefs.
Judging and Competing on TV
He was a judge on shows like the World Food Championships. He also judged on Tailgate Warriors With Guy Fieri and American Grilled.
Ray has even been a contestant himself! He competed on the Food Network show Chopped. On this show, chefs have to create dishes using mystery ingredients.
