Ray Shirley White Sr. is an American singer and guitarist. He is famous for his soulful voice and rock and blues guitar playing. Many people know him best from his time with Frank Zappa's touring bands.

Ray White's Music Career

Ray White joined Frank Zappa's band in late 1976. He played rhythm guitar and sang. Later, in 1980 and 1984, he formed a great singing team with Ike Willis. You can hear Ray White's voice on albums like Zappa in New York and You Are What You Is. He also appeared in videos such as The Torture Never Stops and Does Humor Belong in Music?. Ray White was a very religious person. He felt uncomfortable with some of the other band members' beliefs. This led to him leaving the band.

Working with Other Bands

After his time with Frank Zappa, Ray White worked with other groups. These included jam-oriented bands like KVHW, Don't Push the Clown, and Umphrey's McGee. He also collaborated with many artists from Michigan. These artists included Bob Weaver, a former drummer for Rare Earth. He also worked with members of the funk/fusion group Generic Produce.

Honoring Frank Zappa's Music

In 2007, Ray White joined Dweezil Zappa as a special guest. Dweezil Zappa is Frank Zappa's son. They toured together for the Zappa Plays Zappa Tour. Ray White is also a member of a group called Band From Utopia. This group is also known as Banned from Utopia. It is made up of musicians who used to play in Frank Zappa's band. They formed the group to honor Frank Zappa's amazing music.

Ray White is also part of The Zappa Band. This is another group of former Frank Zappa musicians. The band includes keyboardist and guitarist Mike Keneally. It also has multi-instrumentalist Robert Martin. The bassist is Scott Thunes, and the drummer is Joe Travers. Jamie Kime plays guitar, and Ray White sings and plays guitar.
