Rayforstia is a special group of tiny spiders. These spiders belong to a family called Anapidae. They are often very small, sometimes only a millimeter or two long!
Scientists Rix and Harvey first officially described this group of spiders in 2010. As of 2017, there are 12 known types, or species, of Rayforstia spiders.

About Rayforstia Spiders
Rayforstia spiders are part of the Araneomorphae group. This means they are "true spiders." Most spiders you see every day, like garden spiders, are true spiders.
What are Anapidae Spiders?
The Anapidae family is known for its very small members. Many spiders in this family are less than 2 millimeters long. They often live in damp places, like leaf litter or moss. They can also be found under rocks or in caves.
These tiny spiders are important parts of their ecosystems. They help control insect populations. Even though they are small, they play a big role in nature.
Where Do Rayforstia Spiders Live?
Most Rayforstia spiders are found in Australia and New Zealand. These countries have many unique animals. Scientists are still learning about all the different places these tiny spiders live. They often hide in places that are hard for humans to reach.
Different Kinds of Rayforstia
There are 12 known species within the Rayforstia group. Each species has its own unique features. However, they all share common traits that place them in the Rayforstia genus. Scientists study these differences to understand how spiders evolve.
Species of Rayforstia
Here are the 12 types of Rayforstia spiders known today:
- Rayforstia antipoda (Forster, 1959)
- Rayforstia insula (Forster, 1959)
- Rayforstia lordhowensis Rix & Harvey, 2010
- Rayforstia mcfarlanei (Forster, 1959)
- Rayforstia plebeia (Forster, 1959)
- Rayforstia propinqua (Forster, 1959)
- Rayforstia raveni Rix & Harvey, 2010
- Rayforstia salmoni (Forster, 1959)
- Rayforstia scuta (Forster, 1959)
- Rayforstia signata (Forster, 1959)
- Rayforstia vulgaris (Forster, 1959)
- Rayforstia wisei (Forster, 1964)
