History of Raymond, Ohio
Raymond started out with a different name. It was first called Newton. The town was planned and mapped out in 1838.
How Raymond Got Its Name
The Newton post office opened in 1839. Interestingly, three of the first six people in charge of the post office had the last name Raymond. Because of this, people started calling the settlement "Raymond's post office."
Over time, this name became shorter and shorter. It changed to "Raymond's P.O.," then "Raymond's," then "Raymonds," and finally just "Raymond." The sign you see on the Raymond post office today looks like the old sign from the Toledo & Ohio Central railroad station, which used to be at the south edge of town.
