About Raymond Berthiaume
Raymond Berthiaume was born in Laval, Quebec, on May 9, 1931. He loved music from a young age and studied piano and saxophone at College Laval.
Starting His Music Career
In 1948, when he was about 17, Raymond started an instrumental group called The Three Bars. They played in a local bar. The bar owner thought a singer would make the group even more popular. Raymond was chosen to be the singer, and it was a great decision! The group quickly became known as one of the best in the city. They even performed in a famous nightclub called El Morocco, where big stars like Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett had also sung.
Becoming a Recording Artist
In 1954, a major music company called RCA Victor signed Raymond's trio. They recorded a French version of a popular Italian song called N'oublie Jamais (which means Never Forget). This song became a huge hit, selling almost 40,000 copies! Even with all this fame, Raymond actually preferred working in recording studios more than performing live on stage.
Music for Commercials and Awards
In 1956, Raymond started recording music for advertisements, like for Sweet Caporal cigarettes. His voice was so good that many other companies wanted him to sing for their commercials too.
Later, in 1968, he recorded a French version of Frank Sinatra's song The World We Knew. Raymond's version was called Un Monde Avec Toi (A World With You). This song was so well-loved that he won an award at the "Gala des artistes," which celebrates talented performers.
Raymond Berthiaume passed away on June 23, 2009, in Montreal, Quebec, after battling cancer. He left behind a wonderful collection of music.
