Raymond Dixon facts for kids
Raymond Alan Dixon (born 1 December 1947) is a British scientist who studies tiny living things called microbes, especially bacteria. He works at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, UK. His main focus is understanding how bacteria can naturally turn nitrogen gas from the air into a form plants can use. This process is called nitrogen fixation.

Who is Raymond Dixon?
Raymond Dixon is a very important scientist. He was born in 1947. He went to the University of Reading and the University of Sussex to study science. He earned his first degree in 1969 and his advanced degree in 1972.
Making New Discoveries
In 1972, Dr. Dixon did something amazing. He created the very first living thing that could fix nitrogen, even though it normally couldn't. He did this by taking special genes from one type of bacteria, called Klebsiella pneumoniae, and moving them into another type, Escherichia coli. This process of moving genes between bacteria is called conjugation. It was a huge step forward in science!
Working at the John Innes Centre
After his big discovery, Dr. Dixon continued his research. From 1975, he worked at the Nitrogen Fixation Laboratory. This lab later joined with other research centers to become the John Innes Centre in 1995. This center is a famous place where scientists study plants and microbes.
Awards and Recognitions
Dr. Dixon has received many important awards for his work.
- In 1983, he won the Fleming Award from the Microbiology Society. This award celebrates young scientists who have made a big difference in microbiology.
- In 1999, he was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very high honor for scientists in the UK. It means he is recognized as one of the best scientists in the country.
- In 2019, he received the Adam Kondorosi Academia Europea Award. This award recognized his "revolutionary discoveries" about how different living things work together, like plants and bacteria.
Raymond Dixon's work has helped us understand more about how bacteria can help plants grow. This is very important for farming and the environment.
