Read's Cavern is a cool cave located in Burrington Combe, Somerset, England. It's special because people have found signs of ancient life from the Iron Age inside it. This cave is hidden under a place called Dolbury Hill. It has a big main room with a floor made of many rocks.

The cave was explored by a group called the University of Bristol Spelæological Society (UBSS) in the 1920s. During their digs, they found many interesting items from the Iron Age.

What is Read's Cavern Like?

Read's Cavern is a large cave system. It goes deep into the ground, about 62 meters (203 feet) down. The cave is also quite long, stretching for about 1,224 meters (4,016 feet). It has two entrances, which means there are two ways to get in and out. The cave is mostly made of limestone, a common rock found in this area.

How Was Read's Cavern Discovered?

The UBSS team found the cave after moving a lot of rock from under a cliff. This was where a stream disappeared into the ground. Among the things they found were ancient metal objects.

When the cave was first found, people called it Keltic Cavern or Celtic Cavern. But later, the Ordnance Survey (a mapping agency) decided to name it Read's Cavern. They named it after Mr. R. F. Read, who was the person who discovered it. Sometimes, it was also called "Gough's Cave."
