Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Readsville is a small, quiet place in southeastern Callaway County, Missouri. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

You can find Readsville along Missouri Route D. It's about six miles north of Portland and the big Missouri River. It's also about seven miles south of Williamsburg and the major highway I-70. Another small community called Yucatan is just three miles north on Route D.

History

Readsville was started a long time ago, in 1856. A man named John A. Read was the one who settled the area, and that's how the community got its name.

In the same year, 1856, a post office was opened in Readsville. A post office was a very important place back then. It was where people could send and receive letters, which was the main way to communicate with family and friends far away. This post office served the community for many years, finally closing down in 1954.
