Rebecca Hubbard's Early Life and Learning

Rebecca Hubbard is an African-American woman. She grew up in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Her parents came from farming families in Delaware. As a child, Rebecca loved science fiction stories. She was also very good at science and math. She was the first person in her family to go to college.

In 1996, she started college at the University of Pittsburgh. She first planned to study microbiology. But she found she liked working with nature more. So, she changed her focus to ecology and evolution. She studied how plants compete in forests.

Her interest in biostatistics began during a summer program. This program was at Harvard University. She graduated with high honors in 1999. She then won a special scholarship. This scholarship, called a Marshall Scholarship, took her to Scotland.

She earned a master's degree in epidemiology in 2001. This was at the University of Edinburgh. Then, she got another master's degree in statistics. This was in 2002 at the University of Oxford in England. She came back to the US for her PhD. She earned her PhD in biostatistics in 2007. This was from the University of Washington.

Rebecca Hubbard's Career Journey

After finishing her PhD, Rebecca worked at a research center. This was at the University of Washington from 2007 to 2008. She then worked at the Group Health Research Institute. This institute is now called Kaiser Permanente Washington Research Institute. She was there from 2008 to 2014. During this time, she also taught at the University of Washington.

In 2014, she moved to the University of Pennsylvania. She became an associate professor there. She taught biostatistics, epidemiology, and informatics. In 2020, she became a full professor. At the University of Pennsylvania, she helped lead the biostatistics division. She was also part of the Abramson Cancer Center. In 2018, she led the Biometrics Section. This is a part of the American Statistical Association.

In 2024, Professor Hubbard joined the faculty. She became a professor of biostatistics and data science. This was at the Brown University School of Public Health.

Awards and Special Recognition

Rebecca Hubbard has received several important awards.
