Rebutia minuscula is a small, round cactus that grows in South America. You can find it in northern Argentina and Bolivia. It is the main example, or type species, for the entire Rebutia group of cacti.

This cactus is quite popular! It has even won an award called the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. This award means it is a great plant for gardens. Some of its special types, called 'Krainziana', 'Marsoneri', and 'Violaciflora', have also won this award.

What Does Rebutia minuscula Look Like?

This cactus has stems that are shaped like a globe. They can grow up to 5 cm (2 in) across. These cacti often grow in large groups, forming clusters.

The stem has 16 to 20 small ridges, called ribs. It also has tiny bumps, known as tubercles. Each small bump has about 25 to 30 thin, whitish spines. These spines are usually 1–3 mm (0.0–0.1 in) long.

Flowers and Colors

Unlike some other cacti, the flowers of Rebutia minuscula do not grow from the very top of the plant. Instead, they appear around the base of the stem.

The flowers are typically red and can be up to 4 cm (1.6 in) long. However, some types of Rebutia minuscula can have flowers that are yellow or orange. This means the species has a wide range of beautiful flower colors!

Different Kinds of Rebutia minuscula

Scientists recognize a few different kinds, or varieties, of Rebutia minuscula. These are:

  • Rebutia minuscula var. minuscula (the most common type)
  • Rebutia minuscula var. wessneriana (Bewer.) Eb.Scholz
